Terms and conditions

By using ChessMate you agree to these terms. They are short on purpose.
Using the app
ChessMate is free to use, for your own personal, non-commercial play. You may not resell it, charge others for access to it, or pass it off as your own.
Your account
You are responsible for what happens under your account and for keeping any password to it private. Give an age honestly when asked — it decides whether voice chat is available to you, and misstating it defeats a protection meant for children rather than a formality.
One person, one account. Extra accounts made to inflate a rating or evade a restriction may be removed.
Playing fairly
Rated play is only worth anything if it is honest. While playing another person, do not:
- consult an outside chess engine, database or another player for your moves;
- let somebody else play on your account, or play on somebody else's;
- deliberately lose, or arrange a result in advance;
- stall the clock to waste an opponent's time;
- use a modified client, or automate play.
What makes help cheating is that your opponent does not have it. ChessMate shows an evaluation bar beside the board, and it shows the same bar to both players in every game — so it is part of the game here rather than an advantage over anyone. You can switch it off in Settings if you would rather play without it.
Bringing in anything from outside is the line: another engine, an opening book, a database, or a stronger player at your shoulder. Those are yours alone, which is exactly what your opponent cannot answer.
Voice chat and conduct
Voice chat exists so people can talk over a game. Do not use it, or your display name, to harass, threaten or abuse anyone, or for anything hateful or sexual. Voice is not recorded, so reports are acted on by pattern rather than by replaying anything — which means repeated reports about one account carry weight.
You can block any player, and report one from the same menu.
When these are broken
An account may be restricted for a period, have voice withdrawn, or be removed entirely. Serious or repeated cheating and abuse are the cases that lead to removal.
Availability
ChessMate is provided as it is, with no guarantee that it will be available or uninterrupted. Games can be lost to a server restart or a network failure. It is a chess app, not something to rely on for anything that matters materially, and to the extent the law allows there is no liability for loss arising from using it.
Ending it
You can delete your account at any time, which ends these terms between us. The service, or any part of it, may be discontinued; if that happens it will be announced in the app first.
Changes
These terms may change. The date at the top changes with them, and continuing to use the app after a change means accepting it.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of Tamil Nadu have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
